WooCommerce vs Shopify (2026): India, US, UK and UAE

WooCommerce vs Shopify (2026): which is better for D2C in India, the US, the UK and the UAE?

A plain comparison of Shopify and WooCommerce for D2C brands: payments, tax, cost, SEO and migration, with a section for each market. We build only on Shopify, so we also say where WooCommerce is the better call.

What each platform is

Short answer: Shopify is hosted. You pay a monthly plan and Shopify runs the servers, security and updates. WooCommerce is free software for WordPress. You host it yourself and keep it updated, which gives you more control and more to maintain.

WooCommerce

Self-hosted. You own the stack.

Free plugin for WordPress.

  • You buy and manage hosting, SSL and backups
  • Core, theme and plugin updates are your job
  • Full access to code and database
  • Features come from plugins or custom PHP
  • Your files and database stay with you

Shopify

Hosted. Shopify runs the stack.

Monthly plan that includes hosting.

  • Hosting, SSL and security are included
  • Shopify handles platform updates
  • Customized through themes, apps and APIs
  • Apps for local payments, tax and shipping
  • Store data can be exported

That split decides most of the rest. WooCommerce gives control with responsibility. Shopify gives managed reliability with limits on how deep you can customize. For a team without engineers, Shopify usually asks for less of your attention, which matters most on the day a sale goes live.

Which market are you in?

Short answer: The platform trade-off is the same everywhere, but payments, tax and pay-later options are not. Shopify Payments and WooPayments are available in the US, UK and UAE but not in India, and tax tooling differs in each market.

India

India: payments, COD, GST and shipping

Short answer: Six things decide it in India: payment gateways, cash on delivery, shipping, GST invoicing, selling abroad and how much upkeep your team can carry. Both platforms can do all of them. The difference is how much setup and maintenance each one needs.

  1. 1

    Payments

Razorpay, Cashfree and PayU work with both platforms. Shopify Payments and WooPayments are not available in India, so Indian stores use these gateways on either one. Check each gateway's current support for UPI, EMI and COD. Our Razorpay vs PayU vs Stripe guide compares them.

  2. 2

    Cash on delivery and RTO

COD is still a large share of orders for many Indian D2C brands, and every return to origin costs money. Shopify has apps built for this, such as GoKwik, Shiprocket Checkout and Shopflo, which add OTP checks, risk scoring and partial prepayment. WooCommerce has plugins for the same jobs, but quality and support vary, so test each one before a sale. See our guides on reducing RTO on COD and COD and OTP setup.

  3. 3

    Shipping and returns

Shiprocket, Delhivery and other carriers offer both Shopify apps and WooCommerce plugins, including non-delivery report workflows. This is close to a tie. Our Shiprocket vs Delhivery comparison helps you pick.

  4. 4

    GST invoicing

Both platforms need an app or plugin, or a custom template, to produce GST-compliant invoices. Confirm the invoice format with your accountant before launch, whichever platform you choose.

  5. 5

    Selling in other countries

Shopify Markets lets one store sell in several currencies with local pricing. On WooCommerce you usually add plugins for currencies, taxes and translation. If you plan to sell abroad, see the sections below for the US, UK and UAE.

  6. 6

    Upkeep

A typical Indian D2C store runs many extensions: payments, COD checks, shipping, GST, WhatsApp, email and loyalty. On WooCommerce each one is a plugin that must stay compatible with WordPress, your theme and the other plugins. On Shopify the platform updates are managed for you, so fewer things change at once.

United States

US: payments, sales tax and pay later

Short answer: In the US both platforms have native payments and automated sales tax calculation, so the choice comes down to upkeep, pay-later options and how much custom logic you need. Shopify is the simpler choice for most D2C brands without a developer.

If you sell mainly to US shoppers, read our page for US D2C brands.

United Kingdom

UK: VAT, pay later and pounds

Short answer: In the UK both platforms cover native payments and VAT tooling, so the choice again comes down to upkeep and custom needs. Shopify has the more direct pay-later route, with Klarna in Shopify Payments and Shop Pay Installments.

  • Payments: Shopify Payments is available in the UK and lists Klarna as a local payment method, and WooPayments is open to UK businesses. See Shopify's UK payment methods
  • Pay later: Shop Pay Installments in the UK offers three payments on orders of £50 to £999.99 and monthly plans on orders of £150 to £30,000. Clearpay is not listed on Shopify's UK Shopify Payments page. Our Klarna vs Clearpay guide explains the options
  • VAT: Shopify Tax covers VAT invoices and VAT validation at checkout for the UK and EU, and the WooCommerce Tax extension supports UK-based stores. See our VAT and MTD guide
  • Prices: Shopify's UK plans are priced in pounds. See the cost table below

If you sell mainly to UK shoppers, read our page for UK D2C brands.

United Arab Emirates

UAE: VAT, Arabic and local payments

Short answer: In the UAE both platforms offer native payments, but neither tax tool lists the UAE, so plan your 5% VAT setup yourself. Shopify is the simpler choice for most D2C brands without a developer, and WooCommerce still fits when a content-led WordPress site and a developer are already in place.

  • Payments: Shopify Payments is available in the UAE, and WooPayments is open to UAE businesses with a business account. See the Shopify Payments country list and the WooPayments country list
  • VAT: the UAE standard VAT rate is 5%. Shopify Tax and the WooCommerce Tax extension do not list the UAE, so set up your rates and tax invoices yourself and confirm the details with your accountant. See the Federal Tax Authority and the Ministry of Finance
  • Arabic and right-to-left: Shopify supports right-to-left languages in checkout and customer accounts, and theme support varies. WordPress supports right-to-left languages, and the result on WooCommerce depends on your theme and plugins. Test the full store on mobile in either case
  • Prices: Shopify's UAE pricing page shows plan prices in US dollars. See the cost table below

If you sell mainly to UAE shoppers, read our page for UAE D2C brands.

Side-by-side comparison

Short answer: Shopify has the edge on managed hosting, upkeep and selling abroad. WooCommerce has the edge on SEO control, content, customization depth and data ownership. Payments, tax, shipping and messaging are close to a tie, and the details depend on your market.

What each really costs

Short answer: WooCommerce software is free, but a live store still pays for hosting, security, plugins and developer time. Shopify bundles hosting into a monthly plan. Which is cheaper depends on your traffic, how many extensions you need and what a developer costs you, so compare twelve months of total cost, not the license price.

On the India, UK and UAE pages Shopify lists a third-party gateway fee of 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus. It does not apply to orders paid with Shopify Payments, Shop Pay or Shop Pay Installments. Shopify Payments is not available in India, so Indian stores feel this fee more. See our guide to Shopify fees and Shopify's third-party fee page.

Want your own number for India? Our Shopify pricing guide for India has a calculator that adds the plan, apps and gateway fees. To compare fairly: list the extensions you need on each platform and add their yearly cost, ask your host or developer for a quote, add gateway fees, then allow a buffer for fixes.

Which one should you choose?

Short answer: Choose Shopify if you are launching or scaling without a full-time developer and want payments, tax and shipping working quickly. Choose WooCommerce if your revenue depends on a large WordPress content site, you have a developer and you need custom logic.

Choose

Shopify if

  • You launch or scale without a full-time developer
  • You want to go live in weeks. Our standard Shopify launch takes 2–3 weeks
  • You need payments, tax and shipping tools working together in your market
  • You plan to sell in other countries
  • You want someone else to run hosting and security

Choose

WooCommerce if

  • A large WordPress content site drives most of your revenue
  • You have a developer or a WooCommerce agency on retainer
  • Your catalog or checkout needs custom logic, such as complex B2B pricing or ERP-style workflows
  • You want full ownership of code and database

We build only on Shopify, so weigh our view with that in mind. If your answers point to WooCommerce, we will tell you so on a call. You can also start with our free store audit.

Moving from WooCommerce to Shopify

Short answer: A migration moves products, customers, orders and content, and redirects every old URL. Done carefully, it protects most of your search traffic, but no agency can promise rankings will not change. Timing depends on catalog size, order history and custom features. We confirm it in a written, fixed-price proposal within 2 working days.

  1. Audit and URL map

Crawl the live site and list every product, collection and blog URL. Map each one to its Shopify address before anything goes live.

  2. Move the data

Take a full backup, then move products, variants, images, customers, orders and blog posts with import tools.

  3. Build the theme and local stack

Set up the theme, then connect payments, tax or VAT setup, shipping, email and any local tools such as COD checks and GST invoicing in India.

  4. Carry over SEO

Upload the 301 redirects, move titles, descriptions and image alt text, and submit the new sitemap to Search Console.

  5. Launch and monitor

Switch the domain, then watch Search Console and analytics for errors or drops and fix gaps. Our projects include 30 days of post-launch support.

Migration readiness checklist

  • Export the full product catalog with variants, images and metadata.
  • Crawl every live URL and keep the list as your redirect source.
  • Export customers and order history.
  • List every active plugin and the job it does, then find the Shopify equivalent for each.
  • Export page titles, descriptions and image alt text.
  • List blog posts and decide the new URL for each one.
  • Find your most-linked pages and make sure each has a 301 redirect.
  • Confirm your payment gateway account is ready to connect.
  • Note your tax setup: GST in India, sales tax in the US, VAT in the UK or UAE.
  • Note any custom features and check that Shopify can support them.
  • Set up Google Search Console for the new setup before launch.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use Shopify or WooCommerce for a D2C brand?

For most D2C brands without an in-house engineering team, Shopify is the safer choice, in India, the US, the UK and the UAE. Hosting, security and platform updates are managed for you, and apps cover payments, tax and shipping. Our standard Shopify launch takes 2–3 weeks. WooCommerce fits better when your business runs on a large WordPress content site, you have a developer on hand and you need custom logic Shopify cannot support.

Is Shopify more expensive than WooCommerce?

Not always, because WooCommerce is free software but still has running costs. WooCommerce adds hosting, security, plugin licenses and developer time. Shopify bundles hosting into a monthly plan, for example £25 a month for Basic on monthly billing in the UK, or ₹1,994 in India, as listed on Shopify's pricing pages on 7 and 12 October 2026. Compare twelve months of total cost on both platforms.

Which is better for a US D2C brand?

For most US D2C brands without a developer, Shopify is the simpler choice. Both platforms offer native payments for US businesses and automated sales tax calculation. Shopify adds Shop Pay Installments for stores that use Shopify Payments and Shop Pay, while WooCommerce pay-later options come from plugins. Choose WooCommerce if a WordPress content site drives your revenue and you have a developer.

Which is better for a UK D2C brand?

For most UK D2C brands without a developer, Shopify is the simpler choice. Shopify Payments lists Klarna as a local payment method in the UK, and Shopify Tax covers UK VAT invoices and VAT validation at checkout. WooPayments and the WooCommerce Tax extension also cover UK businesses, so the decision comes down to upkeep, content needs and custom logic.

Which is better for a UAE D2C brand?

For most UAE D2C brands without a developer, Shopify is the simpler choice, but plan your VAT setup. Shopify Payments and WooPayments are both available to UAE businesses. Neither Shopify Tax nor the WooCommerce Tax extension lists the UAE, so set up 5% VAT rates and invoices yourself and confirm the details with your accountant. Shopify supports right-to-left languages in checkout and customer accounts, and theme support for Arabic varies.

Does Shopify Payments work in every market?

No. Shopify Payments is available in the US, UK and UAE, but not in India. WooPayments follows the same pattern for these four markets. Indian stores use gateways such as Razorpay, Cashfree or PayU on either platform. Where Shopify Payments is available, using it avoids Shopify's third-party transaction fee.

Does Shopify work with Razorpay in India?

Yes, Razorpay, Cashfree and PayU can all be used on Shopify stores in India. Shopify Payments is not available in India, so Indian stores connect one of these gateways instead. Check each gateway's current support for UPI, EMI and cash on delivery before you choose.

Can I move from WooCommerce to Shopify without losing SEO?

You can protect your SEO, but no one can promise rankings stay identical. A careful migration maps every old URL to its new address with a 301 redirect, carries over page titles, descriptions and image alt text, keeps your content and submits the new sitemap to Google Search Console. The timeline depends on your catalog size, order history and custom features, and we confirm it in a written, fixed-price proposal within 2 working days of your request.

Which is better for SEO, WooCommerce or Shopify?

WooCommerce gives you more SEO control, while Shopify is enough for most D2C stores. WordPress allows custom URL structures, deeper schema control and a stronger blogging system. Shopify has fixed /products/ and /collections/ URL paths but covers the basics well and is easier to maintain without a developer.

When is WooCommerce the better choice?

WooCommerce is better when your business is content-led, you have a developer and you need custom logic. That usually means a large WordPress site that drives most of your revenue, a developer or agency on retainer to manage updates, and checkout or catalog rules that Shopify's APIs cannot support. If most of those apply to you, we will tell you so on the call.
